PsyBA approved Master Classes for Board approved Supervisors

PsyBA approved Supervisors (BAS) who wish to maintain their PsyBA approvals to supervise are required to refresh their training every five years by completing at least one Board approved Master Class. A Master Class is a competency-based training workshop, requiring at least six hours of direct/live training.

Amber Louise Howard offers two Master Class topics for clinicians who would like to engage in refresher training to retain their PsyBA approvals to supervise. One Master Class offered is the ‘Editing Case Reports and Utilising Live Observations’ workshop, which is delivered three times per calendar year, online and in-person. The second Master Class offered is the ‘Bridging Workshop: Reviewing Competency-Based Supervision’, which is offered once per calendar year and online.

The following training will also satisfy the refresher training requirement to retain PsyBA approvals to supervise:

  • More than one master class
  • Part 2 of full training
  • Parts 1 and 2 of full training
  • Parts 2 and 3 of full training, or
  • All three parts of full training

Psychologists who have had a break from supervision or from practice more generally, or feel they need to refresh their knowledge and skills across the supervisor competencies, are encouraged to complete the PsyBA approved Full Supervisor Training (at least Module 2: Skills Based Workshop) instead of a Master Class.

Editing Case Reports and Utilising Live Observations

This Master Class focuses on some of the assessment requirements of the various internships to upskill current Board-approved supervisors in supervising live and written assessments.

It will explore in depth the requirements for the case reports, with opportunities to edit and discuss as a group, explore various methods to assess live observations to assist supervisors in evaluating and providing feedback on broad and specific skills. It will also include information about the various micro-therapeutic skills deemed essential when supervising, such as setting agendas, supervision notes, and progress report writing. The workshop will conclude with updates on any recent changes to policies, procedures, guidelines, and forms.

The Master Class contains an assessment component enabling you to continue to meet eligibility as a supervisor with the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA) and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).

This course attracts 7 Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Points.

Learning Outcomes

  • To understand the format and requirements of a case report
  • Engage in group discussion surrounding editing a case report ready for submission
  • To understand the various evaluation techniques to use when undertaking a live observation
  • To practice providing feedback to a supervisor in relation to their live observation
  • To understand the structure of supervision case notes and progress reports
  • To be informed of any recent changes from the board

Course Outline

  • Session 1: Editing Case Reports – Case formulation, diagnosis and the case report. Unpacking a draft report.
  • Session 2: Live Observations – Exploring the different types, assessment techniques, feedback assessment tools, and implementing training activities.
  • Session 3: Supervision notes – Setting an agenda, format of notes, reviewing goals across 8 core competencies, and transferring information regarding ongoing supervisor training.

Bridging Workshop: Reviewing Competency-Based Supervision

This Master Class workshop is a bridging course to inform current Board-approved supervisors of their requirements in competency-based supervision and the core competencies supervisors must fulfil. It will explore recent changes to guidelines, forms, procedures, and requirements in 4+2 and 5+1 pathways, higher degrees and endorsed pathways. This interactive workshop aims to deliver participants experiential learning opportunities methods, techniques, interpersonal and reflective practice skills.

The Master Class contains an assessment component enabling you to continue to meet eligibility as a supervisor with the Psychology Board of Australia and the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA).
